NUPPL commissions 660 MW Unit 2 of Ghatanpur thermal project

In a press release dated December 9, 2025, NLC India Limited announced that Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited, its joint venture with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited, has declared commercial operation for Unit 2 of the Ghatanpur Thermal Power Project. The 660 MW unit entered commercial operation at 00:00 hours on 09 December 2025.
With Unit 2 online, the Ghatanpur plant now has 1,320 MW in service. Unit 1 achieved commercial operation in December 2024. Most of the power is allocated to Uttar Pradesh, with some supply to states such as Assam to support grid stability. When all three units are commissioned, the project will total 1,980 MW and is expected to generate about 14,743 million units each year.
The project includes flue gas desulphurization and zero liquid discharge systems. It also has a linked captive coal mine in Jharkhand to ensure fuel supply. The final unit is scheduled for completion in the current financial year.
