NHPC Limited has achieved test synchronisation of the 250 MW Unit 2 of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project with the national grid on 2 December 2025. The company expects the commercial operation date for Unit 2 by this month.
The synchronisation marks a key step in the phased commissioning of the eight-unit project. NHPC leadership, including CMD Bhupender Gupta, Government Nominee Director Mohammad Afzal, directors from personnel, projects, technical and finance, independent directors and senior officials from the corporate office and the project, joined the event virtually. Executives on site included Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director and Head of the Subansiri Lower Project, and I P Ranjan, Executive Director for operations and maintenance.
Company leadership noted the support received from the Ministry of Power, the Governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, past NHPC leadership teams, project staff and partner agencies. They stated that the synchronisation confirms project progress and its role in supporting grid reliability. NHPC added that this milestone moves the project closer to full commissioning and aligns with national clean energy goals.
After all eight units are commissioned, the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower project will be India’s largest hydropower station. NHPC had earlier begun wet commissioning of Unit 1 on 24 October 2025 after completing the mechanical run and starting the synchronisation process.
