The Government of Telangana has detailed a comprehensive strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2047, aligning this environmental goal with an ambitious economic target of becoming a USD 3 trillion economy. The plan, part of the ‘Telangana Rising 2047’ vision, outlines major investments in renewable energy, industrial decarbonization, electric transportation, and sustainable agriculture.
The state currently has a renewable energy capacity of 11,399 MW and plans to add a further 20,000 MW by 2030. Its new Green Energy Policy 2.0 seeks to create an integrated legal framework for renewables, grid management, and storage. To meet its economic objectives, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka stated the state will require 1,39,310 MW of power by 2047, necessitating a 10% annual growth in electricity demand alongside 13% annual economic growth.
Key initiatives span multiple sectors. In transportation, the government aims for 100% electric public transit by 2030, which includes deploying over 2,000 electric buses for Hyderabad and installing 6,000 public charging stations statewide. The Telangana Mobility Valley (TMV) is intended to establish the state as a hub for electric vehicle and hydrogen technology manufacturing.
Industrial reforms focus on decarbonization, with plans to convert 80% of red and orange category industries inside the Outer Ring Road into eco-industrial parks by 2030, supported by a Green Industrial Fund. Shared carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure is planned, with pilot projects at power plants in Ramagundam, Singareni, and Bhadradri.
Agricultural and waste management strategies include promoting solar pumps and microgrids, reducing methane from livestock by 30-40%, and banning organic waste landfills from 2030. The ‘Waste to Wealth’ initiative will develop biomethanation and biochar projects in several cities, including a 200 MW waste-to-energy plant in the GHMC area. A state-wide digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) system will guide MSMEs in reducing emissions.
The government’s overarching goal is to cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 90% by 2047, transforming Telangana into a “Living Carbon State” with 50% greenery cover.
