Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (Mahagenco) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to jointly develop nuclear power projects in the state. Maharashtra is the first state to partner with the central government under its nuclear based power initiative.
The agreement aims to support Maharashtra’s shift toward clean and reliable baseload power. It covers the design, development, and commissioning of a nuclear plant that meets AERB and DAE requirements. It also seeks to study the possibility of a reactor assembly line to promote local manufacturing under the Make in Maharashtra initiative.
The chief minister said the MoU will help streamline policy and regulatory coordination through Maharashtra Institution for Transformation and the state energy department. He noted that this marks the first time the state utility is entering the nuclear space with NPCIL. He added that the partnership aligns with national goals on energy self-sufficiency and the rising need for clean power for data centres. Maharashtra holds nearly 50 to 60 per cent of the country’s data centre capacity, and growth is expected to continue.
