Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (AP Genco) has proposed a 3,200 megawatt (MW) thermal power project at Vennelavalasa in Srikakulam district, with an estimated investment of Rs 30,000 crore.

The project will have four units of 800 MW each and require about 2,000 acres of land. A detailed project report is being prepared by Delhi-based Desi In, with surveys and studies undertaken by AP Space Application Centre and Andhra University.

Officials expect the project to be completed within four years of construction. Coal supply is planned through the upcoming Mulapeta port, and water will be drawn from the Hirmandalam reservoir.

Protests have already begun against the proposal, echoing earlier agitations in the district against power plants at Sompeta and Kakarapalli. The state government plans to engage with communities to explain the technology and benefits of the project.
