Nalco plans Rs 300 billion investment in new smelter and power plant

National Aluminium Company (Nalco) has outlined an investment of about Rs 300 billion over the next five years to establish a new aluminium smelter along with a coal-based power plant.

The company has allocated around Rs 170–180 billion for the smelter project in Odisha, while approximately Rs 120 billion will be directed toward the power facility. Funding will come from a mix of debt and internal accruals. Nalco is targeting the commissioning of the smelter by 2030 as part of its roadmap to attain Maharatna status.

For the financial year 2024–25, Nalco reported bauxite production of 7.26 million tonnes, alumina hydrate output of 2.08 million tonnes, and aluminium production of 0.46 million tonnes. Net power generation stood at 6,641 million units, along with 281 million units from wind power.

On the financial side, Nalco recorded gross sales of Rs 16,662 crore. Profit before tax was Rs 7,135 crore, while profit after tax stood at Rs 5,325 crore. Export turnover amounted to Rs 5,517 crore. The company reported earnings per share of Rs 28.99 and book value per share of Rs 98.25. The dividend for the year, including the proposed final dividend, was Rs 10.50 per share.
