Sunsure Energy signs battery storage agreement with NVVN

Sunsure Energy has signed a 15-year battery energy discharge purchase agreement with NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN) for a capacity of 125 MW/500 MWh. Under the arrangement, the company will establish a standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Garautha substation in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, on a build, own, operate basis.
The agreement marks Sunsure’s first long-term power supply contract through a BESS. Power will be supplied to NVVN, with Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) as the end procurer. Sunsure will deliver four hours of on-demand electricity between 6 PM and 10 AM, allowing UPPCL to access renewable energy during evening and morning peak demand at competitive, long-term tariffs.
The contract also represents a shift in India’s storage sector. Unlike earlier agreements based on fixed monthly charges, billing under this structure will follow a fixed tariff (Rs/kWh) for discharged energy.
The development adds to Sunsure’s recent expansion in renewable energy. In April 2025, the company placed a 100.8 MW wind order with Suzlon, signed an 11 MWp solar PPA with JSL Super Steel, and earlier in January 2025 secured a 300 MW solar PPA with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). Sunsure has also raised debt financing through 2025 to support its project pipeline.
