The Centre plans to install rooftop solar systems in one crore households by 2026–27 under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi recently informed the Lok Sabha.

According to the minister, the country has saved nearly Rs 4 lakh crore by reducing fossil fuel imports and pollution.

India has already met its Paris Agreement target of sourcing 50 per cent of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, achieving this five years ahead of its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) deadline.

India’s total installed renewable energy capacity has crossed 245 GW, including 116 GW from solar and 52 GW from wind.
