Tamil Nadu sets new record with 5,512 MW solar power generation
Tamil Nadu has achieved a new milestone in the solar power sector, generating 5,512 MW of solar power recently, surpassing the previous record of 5,398 MW set on March 5, 2024. On the day of this achievement, the absorption of power into the grid was 39.2 million units (MU), according to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco).
This new record follows significant accomplishments in Tamil Nadu’s renewable energy sector, including a record wind power generation of 5,838 MW on September 10, 2023. Additionally, the state broke its own record for single-day solar energy generation, reaching 40.50 MU on April 23, 2024.
For the fiscal year 2023-24, Tamil Nadu harnessed 11,033 MU of solar energy from state transmission utility-installed solar power plants. With an installed solar capacity of 8,145.53 MW (including rooftop and CTU connectivity), Tamil Nadu ranks fourth in India.
As of June 30, 2024, the state’s total installed renewable power capacity stood at 22,754 MW. This includes 10,789 MW of wind power, 8,617 MW of solar power (with 7,873 MW from ground-mounted installations and 6,790 MW from rooftop systems), 969 MW from biomass, and 2,178 MW from large hydro power.
