NLC India Limited (NLCIL) and Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the sourcing and development of critical minerals and rare earth elements (REE). The agreement was formalized on May 6, 2025.
The partnership will focus on mining, extraction, and refining of key minerals vital to India’s energy security and technological growth. These include materials essential to renewable energy, electric mobility, defence, and electronics sectors.
The companies will explore both domestic and international opportunities to secure access to critical mineral resources. This includes identifying mineral assets and working jointly on excavation and refining operations. The MoU aligns with the Government of India’s efforts to strengthen public sector participation in securing these strategic resources.
The agreement also supports the broader national objective of reducing import dependence and establishing long-term supply chains for materials that are crucial to India’s clean energy transition and industrial development.
