The Indian government has extended its directive requiring imported coal-based (ICB) power plants to operate at full capacity until 30 June 2025. This decision comes in response to the expected high electricity demand during the summer season.
The mandate, which applies to ICB plants including those operated by Adani Power, Mundra Power, and Essar Power, has been extended multiple times. It was initially valid until 28 February 2025, then extended to the end of April, and now further pushed to cover the peak summer period.
The move aims to ensure electricity supply stability amid rising temperatures and anticipated heatwaves across several regions. High summer demand typically strains the grid, making continuous operation of ICB plants necessary to maintain power availability.
