Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) have signed an agreement for the Adilabad Coal-Based Power Project Stage II. The deal was finalized on March 11, 2025.
Under the agreement, BHEL will handle civil works and supply key equipment, including boilers, turbines, and generators. The project, expected to be completed in 40 months, will add an 800 MW unit to the existing 1,200 MW power plant at Pegadapalli in the Mancherial district. SCCL is investing Rs 58.79 billion in the expansion.
BHEL received the Letter of Intent (LOI) for the project in February 2025.
SCCL, a 51:49 joint venture between the Government of Telangana and the Government of India, first commissioned the power plant’s Stage I units in August 2016. While Stage II was originally planned as a 600 MW expansion, it was later revised to 800 MW.
Coal for the new unit will come from SCCL’s existing and upcoming opencast mines, including SRPOC-I, SRPOC-II, and RKP OC Phase-I. Additionally, the Ministry of Coal allocated the Naini coal block in Odisha for the project in March 2015. Water needs, estimated at 1,800 m³/h, will be met through the Godavari and Pranahitha rivers.
