KPIT Technologies and Trentar Energy Solutions have entered into a collaboration for the development and commercialisation of sodium-ion battery technology. As part of this agreement, KPIT will transfer its sodium-ion battery technology to Trentar, which will focus on scaling up production and operationalising the technology.
Under the technology transfer agreement, Trentar will invest in the establishment of a 3 GWh sodium-ion battery manufacturing facility. In return, KPIT will receive upfront technology transfer fees along with royalty payments over eight years.
Sodium-ion batteries offer a longer lifespan, retaining 80 per cent capacity over 3,000 to 6,000 cycles, and charge faster compared to lithium batteries. The technology uses earth-abundant raw materials, making it more affordable for electric mobility in India. Its applications span across electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, public transportation, UPS backups, grid storage, and even marine and defence sectors.
