Jindal Nuclear Power Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Jindal Renewables, has announced plans to develop 18,000 MW of nuclear power capacity by 2047. This aligns with the Government of India’s target of achieving 100,000 MW of nuclear capacity by the same year.
The announcement follows Tata Power’s interest in small modular reactors (SMRs) after the government allowed private investment in the nuclear sector. Tata Power CEO Praveer Sinha stated that the company is awaiting clarity on liability, technology, foreign partnerships, and fuel sourcing before proceeding.
SMR projects require stringent approvals, which take about 24 months, followed by four to five years of construction.
India aims to expand its nuclear capacity from 8 GW to 20 GW by 2032.
