US-based BWXT Technologies has agreed to acquire Canadian nuclear services company Kinectrics for $525 million. The acquisition includes Kinectrics’ net pension and debt liabilities, along with estimated transaction expenses.
This move aims to enhance BWXT’s commercial operations by broadening its offerings in the global nuclear power and radiopharmaceutical industries. Kinectrics will operate as a subsidiary of BWXT, with its financial results incorporated into BWXT’s commercial operations segment.
The deal strengthens BWXT’s position in the growing global nuclear market, particularly the CANDU reactor market, and expands its reach in the US and international markets.
Kinectrics, which employs over 1,300 professionals, operates in two key areas: commercial power services and nuclear medicine. Its commercial services cover the full lifecycle of nuclear power plants, including design, maintenance, and operational support. The nuclear medicine division focuses on isotope production for the radiopharmaceutical industry.
The acquisition, expected to close by mid-2025, is projected to nearly double BWXT’s commercial operations workforce, introduce new expertise in lifecycle management, and support growth in North American and international nuclear markets. It is anticipated to modestly increase BWXT’s earnings, excluding one-time costs.
In addition, BWXT announced a $60 million expansion of its Cambridge, Ontario manufacturing plant in April 2024, expected to create 200 long-term jobs by mid-2026.
