Envision Energy has secured a significant order to supply three battery energy storage systems (BESS) for South Africa’s Oasis 1 cluster of projects, with a total capacity of 257MW and 1,028 megawatt hours (MWh) of storage.
This order, the largest of its kind in South Africa, positions Envision Energy as the first supplier to secure a gigawatt-scale energy storage order in the region.
The Oasis projects, part of South Africa’s first Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP), include the Oasis Aggeneis, Oasis Mookodi, and Oasis Nieuwehoop power plants in Northern Cape.
The projects, developed by EDF in collaboration with Mulilo, Pele Energy Group, and Gibb-Crede, will also feature local community ownership through a Community Trust.
The energy storage systems provided by Envision will include both AC and DC equipment, featuring 20ft, 5MWh storage units powered by high-performance cells. The contract also includes 15 years of operation and maintenance services. The systems will help address grid stability issues, reduce reliance on coal, and enhance renewable energy integration.
Operations for the projects are expected to begin by the end of 2026.
