Mizoram’s power and electricity minister has introduced a new initiative under the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY), enabling households to install rooftop solar systems with substantial government subsidies.
The scheme is available exclusively to Indian citizens who are current electricity consumers with good payment records and is limited to private residential properties.
In partnership with 12 authorised vendors, the state government facilitates installations, with financial support available through national banks such as State Bank of India and Mizoram Rural Bank.
Installation costs are Rs 12,000 within Aizawl Municipal Corporation limits and Rs 18,000 for areas 200 km beyond. As of now, 2,990 households have registered, and 557 applications have been approved.
Households can install systems of up to 10 kW by registering on the state portal, followed by the PM-SGMBY portal. Approved vendors will handle installation and provide five years of maintenance services.

Author: PPD Team Date: April 7, 2025 The power ministry has relaxed siting norms for load-serving substations under interstate transmission system (ISTS) schemes built through the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) route. The revised norms apply to new substations—such as switching stations or HVDC terminals—developed by transmission service providers (TSPs). The change follows industry representations and is now reflected in the amended standard bidding documents (SBD), including the request for proposal (RfP) and transmission service agreement…
