VNG AG, its subsidiary VNG Handel & Vertrieb GmbH (VNG H&V), and Dutch hydrogen company HyCC are planning to jointly develop a 500 MW electrolyser for green hydrogen production in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany.
The green hydrogen will be used by local industries, including SKW Piesteritz, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by replacing natural gas.
The GreenRoot project aims to support regional decarbonisation and could potentially supply other industries in the Central German chemical triangle through a planned connection to the German hydrogen network.
The partners will begin the approval and consultation phase in 2025, make the final investment decision in 2026, and start operations by 2029.
The project will also explore synergies with municipal utilities to provide heat from the facility and has support from local stakeholders, including the Saxony-Anhalt government.
