CPS Energy has teamed up with OCI Energy to develop a 120MW/480MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in southeastern Bexar County, Texas.
The Alamo City ESS LLC project is set to be operational by late 2026.
OCI Energy will handle the development, financing, construction, ownership, and operation of the system, while CPS Energy will maintain operational control to ensure the electrical demand in the San Antonio region is met.
The partnership will also benefit the community, with OCI Energy contributing $250,000 to the University of Texas at San Antonio for educational initiatives.
The Alamo City ESS project, which features a four-hour discharge duration, is part of CPS Energy’s Vision 2027 generation plan to expand its battery storage capacity, which will total 520MW with this addition.
The project will support the region’s energy needs for 20 years, advancing CPS Energy’s strategy of blending renewable and traditional energy sources to power San Antonio’s growing community.
