Innagreen and Cowessess First Nation have inaugurated the Bekevar Wind Farm, a 200MW renewable energy project in Saskatchewan.
Supplying enough zero-emission power to meet the needs of 100,000 homes annually, the project highlights the collaboration between commercial energy companies and Indigenous communities in Canada’s clean energy transition.
Bekevar, located across Hazlewood, Kingsley, and Cowessess First Nation reserve lands, is jointly owned by Innagreen (83%) and Cowessess First Nation (17%). Featuring 36 Nordex N155/5.X turbines, the facility ensures annual returns for the Cowessess community to support economic growth and essential programs.
Construction began in May 2023 with a $173 million loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank, a $50 million federal contribution through the Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways program, and $98 million in debt financing from Nord/LB. SaskPower will purchase the electricity generated under a 25-year power purchase agreement.
Innagreen CEO Olly Alexander and RES Americas CEO André Canguçú commended the partnerships and innovative financing behind the project. SaskPower’s CEO Rupen Pandya emphasized Bekevar’s role in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Innagreen plans further investments in global renewable projects, targeting a 1GW portfolio by 2025.
