Ofgem urges faster grid connections for renewables in UK
The UK’s Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) has called on network operators to expedite the connection of renewables, clean power, and storage projects to the grid.
In response to a backlog of 722 GW of projects awaiting connection, Ofgem has set forth proposals to streamline the process, prioritising projects ready to operate within five years to help meet the UK’s 2030 energy goals.
Ofgem’s reform plan focuses on optimal project placement and voltage management to ensure efficient grid operation but highlights that tightened regulations will be critical to raising service standards. Measures such as stricter licences, financial penalties, and enforcement actions are proposed for companies failing to meet new milestones, with implementation expected within a year.
Eleanor Warburton, Ofgem’s director for Energy System Design and Development, emphasized the need for an overhauled application system to cut delays and limit speculative projects while strengthening customer protections and maintaining investment flow.
In August 2024, Ofgem approved the Anglo-Scottish electricity superhighway project, fast-tracking a critical funding phase to enhance UK grid connectivity.
