NTPC Limited, through its R&D arm NETRA, is set to build a green hydrogen production plant that will use plasma oxy gasification technology for municipal solid waste (MSW) and agri-waste.
This pioneering plant will generate high-purity hydrogen (over 99.9%) through plasma-assisted ‘oxy gasification’ of MSW-RDF/agri-waste, creating a superior synthesis gas (syn-gas). From this, hydrogen is separated using a combination of gas membrane and pressure swing adsorption techniques.
This plant, which is the world’s first of its kind, offers an alternative to electrolysis for producing green hydrogen through gasification and reformation of MSW and agri-waste.
Expected to produce approximately 1 tonne of green hydrogen daily, the plant will gasify around 25 tonnes of MSW/agri-waste per day. Additionally, carbon monoxide extracted from the hydrogen recovery system will be used to generate electricity via a low-calorie gas engine.
In related developments, NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) recently invited bids for a 300 MW ISTS-connected solar project near NTPC Anta, Rajasthan, while NTPC floated a tender for a detailed project report on an 800 MW pumped storage project (PSP) in Amba, Maharashtra.
