QatarEnergy has partnered with TotalEnergies to develop a 1.25 GW (peak) solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Iraq’s Basra region.
Awaiting regulatory approvals, QatarEnergy and TotalEnergies will each hold a 50% stake in the solar facility, which ranks among the world’s largest solar projects.
Equipped with two million bifacial solar panels and single-axis trackers, the project is set to provide clean energy to Iraq’s local electricity grid, powering approximately 350,000 homes upon completion between 2025 and 2027.
This solar initiative forms part of Iraq’s Gas Growth Integrated Project, which QatarEnergy joined in June 2023, aimed at reducing gas flaring and supplying power to local plants. QatarEnergy holds a 25% interest in this broader consortium, with TotalEnergies at 45% and Iraq’s Basra Oil Company at 30%.
QatarEnergy’s CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi emphasized the project’s significance in Iraq’s energy landscape and extended gratitude to the Iraqi government and TotalEnergies for the opportunity to support Iraq’s solar power expansion.
Separately, QatarEnergy plans a 2 GW solar project in Qatar’s Dukhan area, which will more than double the country’s solar capacity to 4 GW, advancing Qatar’s renewable energy goals.
