The 1.3GW Golden Plains wind farm, located in Rokewood, Victoria, has begun supplying renewable energy to the state’s electricity grid.
As the largest wind farm in the southern hemisphere, it will generate 4,000 GWh annually, covering 9% of Victoria’s energy needs and powering 765,000 homes when fully operational.
The project includes a 300MW battery to store surplus energy, ensuring reliable supply during peak demand. The wind farm’s construction created 700 jobs, with 70 permanent roles expected.
Victoria’s renewable energy share has risen from 10% in 2014 to 39% in 2023, with plans to achieve 40% by 2025 and 95% by 2035. The Golden Plains wind farm is part of the state’s broader clean energy strategy, which is projected to stimulate A$9.5 billion in economic activity and create 59,000 jobs.
