China sees record power load as heatwave grips southern provinces
China is facing unprecedented electricity demand as a severe heatwave grips large parts of the country. The National Energy Administration reported that the national power load crossed 1.5 billion kW for the third time in July 2025, marking a new peak in consumption. Delhi discoms directed to prepare for record 9,000 MW summer peak
The Delhi government has asked distribution companies (discoms) to gear up for a record peak power demand of 9,000 MW expected this summer. Discoms have been told to act on four fronts: anticipate demand, ensure readiness, secure adequate power supply, and manage faults and redundancy. To meet peak demand, power has been tied up through long-term, medium-term, and short-term purchase agreements based on projected loads. MoP urges states to identify sites for nuclear power projects
Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has encouraged states to identify viable sites for nuclear power plants, especially in areas far from coal sources. The government has already shortlisted 18 locations across the country for new nuclear capacity, aiming to increase nuclear power from 8 GW to 20 GW by 2032.
