KSEB plans to revive 163 MW Athirapally hydro project

Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is working to revive the long-stalled 163 MW Athirapally Hydro Electric Project in Thrissur district. The project, earlier held back due to environmental concerns, has now received environmental clearance. KSEB’s board of directors has approved a revised plan for the project. THDC and REC sign MoUs for PSPs in Chhattisgarh and Kerala

India’s push for pumped storage projects (PSPs) gained momentum with two key agreements signed on March 11, 2025. MoP to assign nuclear power plant in Kerala

The Ministry of Power (MoP) has planned to set up a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kerala, pending the availability of 60.7 hectares of land.  Athirappilly in Thrissur district and Cheemeni in Kasaragod district have been identified as suitable sites for the plant. Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) intends to utilize the thorium reserves along the Kerala coast to establish a thorium-based NPP.

Kerala announces electricity tariff hike of 16 paise per unit

The Kerala government has announced a 16 paise per unit increase in electricity tariffs for the 2024-25 financial year, effective from December 5, 2024.  An additional hike of 12 paise per unit will follow in the 2025-26 financial year. This marks the fifth tariff increase under the Pinarayi government’s tenure since 2016.
