Sumitomo Electric completes Greenlink Interconnector project, UK-Ireland energy connection

Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd has completed the Greenlink Interconnector Project. This milestone involved installing high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) and fiber optic cables for Greenlink Interconnector Ltd, using Sumitomo Electric’s innovative HVDC cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables.

The project connects the electricity grids of Ireland and the United Kingdom, with a new link between Great Island in County Wexford, Ireland, and Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK. Electricity will flow in both directions based on supply and demand in each country.

Key milestones include completing all testing, commissioning, and handover of the cable system to Siemens Energy AG, with trial operations set to begin soon. The installation included onshore HVDC cables over 24 km in Ireland, 6 km in Wales, and 160 km of submarine cables.

Sumitomo Electric’s successful track record includes the 1,000-MW NEMO HVDC interconnector between the UK and Belgium, which has achieved 99.5% system availability since 2019.
