Scottish Government approves 228 MW Smeaton Battery Energy Storage System
The Scottish Government has approved the construction and operation of the 228 MW Smeaton Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near Dalkeith, East Lothian. This project is part of Kona Energy’s collaboration with the Electricity System Operator (ESO) and National Grid to address energy constraints and enhance network stability.
Kona Energy, in partnership with Zenobē, Eku, and Field, co-authored a proposal to use batteries to reduce public costs associated with energy constraints. With advisory support from Opus Corporate Finance LLP, Kona will soon seek investment to bring the Smeaton BESS project to market.
Kona Energy, a leading clean energy company in the UK, specializes in grid-scale battery storage, developing large-scale projects to balance supply and demand while enhancing renewable energy use. The company is advancing a 1,000 MW portfolio of energy storage projects across the UK.
