Rovco completes UXO clearance for Iberdrola’s Windanker Offshore Wind Farm

Rovco has completed unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance at the Baltic Sea site for the upcoming Windanker offshore wind farm, under a contract awarded by Iberdrola. This project marks Rovco’s inaugural offshore wind venture in German waters.

The operation at Windanker utilized advanced 3D modelling and enhanced inspection capabilities to identify and address UXO and non-UXO objects. Confirmed UXOs were safely relocated or disposed of, with comprehensive inspections ensuring the removal of all potential hazards. Rovco’s newly chartered multipurpose vessel, MV Patriot, played a pivotal role in the operation, featuring essential technologies for efficient site-to-shore communication and rapid data processing.

Rovco’s use of artificial intelligence, robotics, and simultaneous location and mapping technologies underscores its commitment to de-risking seabeds for successful offshore installations. Marc Coull, Rovco’s operations and maintenance director, praised the project as a significant milestone for their construction support services, emphasizing the deployment of their advanced UXO solutions in Germany.

In July 2024, Iberdrola announced the progression of its €1 billion Windanker offshore wind project into its delivery phase. Located in the German Baltic Sea, the 315 MW project, equipped with 21 next-generation turbines of 15 MW each, began fabrication work the same month. Fully commissioned by 2026, the Windanker project will support Iberdrola’s goal of increasing offshore wind capacity from 1.8 GW in 2023 to 4.8 GW by 2026.
