QatarEnergy announces new solar mega project to double solar capacity
QatarEnergy has announced plans to launch a new solar mega project that will more than double the country’s solar energy output. The project aims to increase Qatar’s photovoltaic (PV) solar capacity to approximately 4 GW by constructing one of the world’s largest solar plants in Dukhan, with a capacity of 2 GW.
This new facility will expand QatarEnergy’s existing solar portfolio, which includes the Al-Kharsaah plant, inaugurated in 2022 with an 800 MW capacity, and two additional projects in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed industrial cities, expected to produce a combined 875 MW by the end of the year.
In August 2022, QatarEnergy awarded a $630.33 million contract to South Korean firm Samsung C&T for its industrial cities solar power project (IC Solar). This agreement includes the construction of two solar photovoltaic (PV) plants with a total capacity of 875 MW for clean power generation.
QatarEnergy, a state-owned company, oversees all oil and gas activities in Qatar, including the exploration, production, and sale of crude oil, natural gas, and gas liquids. The company also markets refined products, synthetic fuels, petrochemicals, fuel additives, fertilisers, liquefied natural gas (LNG), steel, and aluminium.
