Power Grid acquires Bhadla-III Power Transmission project

On August 28, 2024, REC Power Development & Consultancy Ltd (RECPDCL) handed over the project Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) “Bhadla-III Power Transmission Ltd” to Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL). PGCIL won the project through a tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) process for an interstate transmission system (ISTS) scheme named “Additional transmission system for Bhadla-III Pooling Station as part of Rajasthan REZ Phase III (20 GW).”

The project, to be developed under the build, own, operate & transfer (BOOT) model, is scheduled for completion in 18 months. It involves the augmentation of the Bhadla-III Pooling Station in Rajasthan with 765/400kV, 2×1500 MVA, and 400/220kV, 2×500 MVA interconnecting transformers.

The SPV was handed over by T.S.C. Bosh, CEO of RECPDCL, to Pankaj Pandey, Executive Director of PGCIL, and Satyaprakash Dash, Company Secretary of PGCIL, in the presence of senior officials from RECPDCL, PGCIL, and Central Transmission Utility of India Ltd (CTUIL).

According to the National Committee on Transmission (NCT), the Bhadla-III project is estimated to have an outlay of Rs 3.69 billion. PGCIL and Sterlite Power were the only contenders for this scheme. The project aims to address connectivity applications at the Bhadla-III Pooling Station in Rajasthan. The official completion date is set for February 28, 2026, with plans to commission one 765/400kV ICT by June 2025 and the second by December 2025.

The two 765/400kV ICTs under this project will be the third and fourth of their kind at the Bhadla-III Pooling Station. The first two are part of another ISTS-TBCB scheme under “Powergrid Bhadla III Transmission Ltd,” which PGCIL is also developing.

This acquisition marks the sixth formal ISTS-TBCB acquisition in FY25 for PGCIL, following previous acquisitions of Khavda IV-E2 Power Transmission Ltd, Rajasthan IV C Power Transmission Ltd, Rajasthan IV E Power Transmission Ltd, Sirohi Transmission Ltd, and Beawar-Mandsaur Transmission Ltd.
