Danish cable manufacturer NKT has secured an order from Belgian transmission system operator Elia Transmission Belgium (ETB) to supply 545 km of high-voltage cables for grid upgrades. This order falls under an existing framework agreement between NKT and ETB, building on a recent 72km cable supply deal.
ETB, part of the Elia Group, manages Belgium’s high-voltage transmission grid, which includes 9,000km of overhead lines and underground cables crucial for the country’s electricity distribution. The power cables for the grid upgrade will be produced at NKT’s facilities in Cologne, Germany, and Velke Meziříčí, Czech Republic, with delivery and installation planned between 2025 and 2027.
The demand for medium and high-voltage power cables is expected to rise as European transmission and distribution system operators work to upgrade and expand their grids. In response, NKT is enhancing production capacity at its facilities in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Portugal, and the Czech Republic, with expanded capacity coming online from 2025 to 2027.
In August 2024, NKT began constructing a third extrusion tower at its offshore high-voltage cable plant in Karlskrona, Sweden, to address the growing demand for cables necessary for the transition to renewable energy.
