Mitsubishi Power, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has secured an order from Samsung C&T Corporation Saudi Arabia to supply its M501JAC combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT), which is hydrogen-ready, for a new industrial steam and electricity co-generation plant in Saudi Arabia.
The 475 MW co-generation power plant, being developed by a consortium led by the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) and Japanese power generation company JERA, will serve a petrochemical complex in Jubail, Eastern Province. The facility is owned by a special purpose entity, with TAQA holding a 51% stake and JERA 49%.
This plant will provide power to the Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical Company (SATORP) Strategic Expansion, a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and TotalEnergies, which will feature one of the largest mixed-load steam crackers in the Gulf region.
The M501JAC turbine will be the first heavy-duty gas turbine assembled by Mitsubishi Power in Saudi Arabia, specifically at their assembly center in Dammam. This 17,200 m² facility not only assembles turbines but also services key components, enhancing local capabilities.
Designed to blend hydrogen with natural gas, the M501JAC turbine offers operational flexibility and rapid startup times, contributing to a stable, low-carbon power supply that aligns with Saudi Arabia’s industrial growth and decarbonization goals.
In addition to supplying the turbine, Mitsubishi Power has signed a long-term service agreement with the TAQA and JERA-led consortium. This agreement covers the provision of parts, repairs, and services to maintain high performance and reliability of the equipment.
