Jupiter Power has commenced commercial operations for its 400 megawatt hours (MWh) Callisto I battery energy storage system (BESS) in Houston, Texas. This facility, strategically located near the Medical Center and Houston ship channel, is expected to enhance the city’s supply of reliable zero-emissions power.

Built on the site of the former HL&P H O Clarke fossil fuel power plant, the Callisto I Energy Center has the potential to add another 400MW/800MWh of battery storage. This project is part of Jupiter Power’s strategy to expand its large-scale battery energy storage operations from West Texas into Houston. Callisto I is Jupiter’s ninth project within the ERCOT (Electrical Reliability Council of Texas) grid, bringing the company’s total storage capacity in the region to 1,375MWh.

In December 2023, Jupiter Power secured a $65.2 million financing agreement with First Citizens Bank for the construction of Callisto I. Jupiter Power CEO Andy Bowman emphasized that the project will help meet Houston’s growing power needs and increase resilience against extreme weather events.

Jupiter Power was acquired by BlackRock Alternatives in November 2022, following an agreement with EnCap Investments. The acquisition included Jupiter Power’s transfer from EnCap Energy Transition Fund I, along with co-investment partners Yorktown Partners and Mercuria Energy.
