Italy considers developing SMRs in energy policy shift
Italy is exploring the development of small nuclear reactors, marking a significant departure from its long-standing nuclear ban, according to Bloomberg. Industry Minister Adolfo Urso announced at the Ambrosetti Forum that the government is in discussions with foreign partners to establish a new company focused on advanced nuclear technology.
Talks are ongoing with key players like Ansaldo Nucleare, a specialist in nuclear plants, Enel, the state energy giant, and Newcleo, known for developing reactors powered by recycled nuclear waste. While no final decision on the international partner has been made, the government is pushing legislative measures to reintroduce nuclear energy by the second half of 2024.
This shift comes as part of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin emphasized the role of nuclear energy in providing a stable supply of clean energy, with a target for nuclear to account for at least 11% of Italy’s electricity by 2050.
