India to lead global bio-manufacturing revolution, says Jitendra Singh
Union Minister Jitendra Singh stated that bio-manufacturing will shape the future of the global economy, and India, with its abundant bio-resources, is well-positioned to lead this revolution. Singh emphasized that, while the West led the IT revolution, India has the potential to spearhead the next big shift in bio-manufacturing.
Singh pointed out that bio-manufacturing offers solutions to global challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, waste generation, and pollution. It can help meet the increasing demand for food and fuel, while also creating new jobs. Currently, India relies heavily on crude oil imports, but bio-manufacturing using biomass and carbon dioxide can make the country more self-reliant in fuel production. Additionally, bio-manufacturing could support the dairy industry through non-dairy milk alternatives, promoting resource sustainability.
Last week, the Union Cabinet approved the ‘BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, and Employment) Policy for Fostering High Performance Biomanufacturing’. This policy aims to boost research, technology development, and commercialization by establishing bio-manufacturing and bio-AI hubs, as well as biofoundries. The initiative will support the production of a wide range of products, from medicine to materials, and promote the use of advanced biotechnological processes in agriculture and manufacturing.
