IAEA head expresses confidence in re-engaging nuclear talks with Iran

Rafael Grossi, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), expressed optimism that Iran will re-engage with the nuclear watchdog after a recent discussion with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. Speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Grossi said Iranian officials indicated a willingness to collaborate more meaningfully with the IAEA.

The IAEA and Iran have had a strained relationship, particularly after Iran barred enrichment experts from the agency’s inspection team and failed to clarify the presence of uranium traces at undeclared sites. Grossi emphasized the need for a new approach to nuclear discussions, noting that the old methods were no longer viable.

Despite tensions, Iran has advanced its nuclear program. The country began constructing four nuclear reactors near Minab and Sirik earlier this year, with a combined projected output of 5 GW. Grossi noted that while Iran has not accelerated its efforts, it continues to make progress, including completing the installation of cascades at the Fordow facility.

Iran has ramped up its nuclear activities since 2019, following the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement. Grossi hopes to make swift progress in the ongoing discussions to ensure transparency around Iran’s nuclear program.
