HydroWing, a division of Inyanga Marine Energy Group, has signed a binding agreement with a sub-holding of Indonesia’s state-owned power company, PLN (Perusahaan Listrik Negara), to develop the country’s first tidal energy project.

The 10 MW tidal current power plant is planned for East Nusa Tenggara in the Indonesian archipelago.

This partnership builds upon a 2022 Memorandum of Understanding between HydroWing and PLN aimed at accelerating tidal energy development in Indonesia through site selection, resource assessment, and initial engineering.

After a comprehensive evaluation, East Nusa Tenggara was chosen for its significant tidal energy potential, attributed to the strong marine currents flowing between the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

PLN will manage site preparation activities, including bathymetric surveys, site assessments, Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measurements, sediment sampling, and interconnection impact studies.

HydroWing will conduct feasibility studies, technology assessments, project implementation scheduling, and operations and maintenance planning. Both parties will collaborate on licensing processes and conduct social and environmental studies to ensure the project’s sustainability and alignment with local community interests.

Richard Parkinson, CEO of Inyanga Marine Energy Group, stated, “Indonesia is seen as a prime market for our innovative tidal energy technology. Indonesia has amongst the best tidal potential in the world due to the throughflow of marine current from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean.”

This initiative is expected to provide stable, renewable energy, supporting both local and national energy objectives, and contributing to Indonesia’s transition towards a more sustainable energy landscape.
