Huawei builds microgrid power station for Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Project

Huawei has completed the construction of the world’s largest microgrid power station, capable of generating one billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually. This microgrid will supply power to Saudi Arabia’s ambitious Red Sea New City project, part of the kingdom’s Vision 2030 initiative. The $500 billion project aims to be the first city powered entirely by renewable energy.

According to Huawei, the station provides 400MW of photovoltaic power and 1.3GWh of energy storage. Since September 2023, the microgrid has been delivering green power to the Red Sea project, which covers 28,000km² and includes 50 islands being transformed into luxury tourism destinations.

This development strengthens China’s role as a top investor in Saudi Arabia, with $16.8 billion in greenfield foreign direct investments in 2023. Saudi Arabia and China are also fostering bilateral opportunities, particularly in green development and energy transition.
