Hitachi Energy has won a contract from Nordic Electro Power (NEPower) to supply power conversion systems for Finland’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS), being developed by Swiss energy company Alpiq in Haapajärvi.

The 125 MW project will support Fingrid’s reserve market and help balance electricity supply and demand. Commissioning is planned for mid-2027.

Hitachi Energy’s scope includes battery storage power conversion systems, transformers, ring main units, a power plant controller, and a supervisory control and data acquisition-based energy management system. The company will also provide installation oversight, commissioning, maintenance, and system integration services.

According to the company, the power conversion solution is modular and scalable, and engineered to operate reliably in harsh Nordic conditions. It is designed to enable fast load management, grid-forming capability, strong cybersecurity, and real-time system visibility, supporting predictive control, fault detection, and performance optimisation.

Commenting on the project, Hitachi Energy Finland managing director Matti Vaattovaara said the investment would strengthen Finland’s energy system as the share of variable renewable energy increases, highlighting the role of energy storage, power electronics, automation, and electrification in maintaining grid stability and flexibility.
