Grenergy and CATL to supply battery for Chile’s Oasis de Atacama solar project
Grenergy has formed a strategic partnership with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co (CATL) to supply batteries for the fourth phase of the Oasis de Atacama solar and storage project in Chile. CATL will provide 1.25 GWh of its EnerX model battery containers, comprising over 7,100 modules, known for high energy density and robust safety features suited to the project’s high-altitude location at 4,000 meters above sea level.
The Oasis de Atacama project, located in northern Chile, has a planned storage capacity of 11 GWh and solar capacity of 2 GW. The project, valued at $2.3 billion, is expected to generate 5.5 TWh of energy annually, bolstering renewable energy capacity in the region. Grenergy has already secured energy sales agreements for the initial four phases of the project. The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology in CATL’s batteries ensures reliability and safety for long-term use.
Grenergy’s executive chairman David Ruiz de Andrés highlighted the collaboration with CATL as a milestone in advancing the Oasis de Atacama project, while CATL’s Tan Libin emphasized their commitment to sustainable energy, supporting Chile’s clean electricity goals through advanced storage solutions.
In a related move, Grenergy Renovables announced plans in September 2024 to acquire a 1 GW solar portfolio in Chile for $128 million, further supporting the Oasis de Atacama project.
