Government approves ASHVINI to develop nuclear power plants

The government has approved the establishment of Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Limited (ASHVINI), a joint venture between Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and NTPC Limited, to build, own, and operate nuclear power plants under the Atomic Energy Act.

As part of this approval, the Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP), consisting of 4×700 MWe reactors based on pressurised heavy-water reactor technology, will be transferred from NPCIL to ASHVINI. Additionally, the government has granted exemptions allowing NPCIL to invest over Rs 5 billion and NTPC over Rs 50 billion in a single joint venture or subsidiary. ASHVINI will also pursue other nuclear power projects across India.
