EET to develop UK’s first large-scale low-carbon hydrogen hub

Essar Energy Transition (EET) Hydrogen is developing the UK’s first large-scale, low-carbon hydrogen production hub at its Stanlow site. The hub will have a total capacity of 1,350 MW and will capture approximately 2.5 million tonnes of carbon annually. The hydrogen produced will be used locally, including at EET Fuels’ Stanlow refinery and by key manufacturers such as Encirc, Pilkington, and Tata Chemicals.

The hub will be built in two stages, with the first plant (HPP1) delivering 350 MW and the second (HPP2) providing 1,000 MW. EET Hydrogen aims to reach over 4,000 MW capacity by 2030. Construction on HPP1 is set to begin in 2025, with hydrogen production expected to start by 2028.

Earlier this year, SSE Thermal partnered with EET Hydrogen to develop the Gowy Green Hydrogen facility in North West England, with work already underway at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.
