EDF Renewables UK to add 300 MW of battery storage
EDF Renewables UK is set to enhance the UK’s energy infrastructure by introducing 300 MW of battery storage projects.
The company’s six battery storage projects, currently under construction, are expected to be operational by summer 2025. These include a 57 MW site in Braintree, Essex, and a 47.5 MW site in Indian Queens, Saint Austell, Cornwall. A 52 MW battery in Sundon, Bedfordshire, has already been energised, and Dorset Council has approved a 47.5 MW battery near Mannington. Combined, these projects will have the capacity to power 400,000 homes for two hours.
To meet UK government’s commitment of achieving a zero-carbon electricity system by 2030, experts estimate that the UK will need between 20 GW and 30 GW of battery storage by 2030.
EDF Renewables UK’s current projects add to its existing portfolio of more than 150 MW of battery energy storage systems operating across Oxfordshire, Kent, and the West Midlands. The company aims to deliver 2 GW of transmission-connected battery storage, with over 400 MW already consented and an additional 313 MW under construction.
In June 2022, EDF Renewables UK also reported that its two approved solar projects, totalling 100 MW capacity, had reached the site preparation and construction stages.
