EBRD provides €25.1 million loan for Bosnia’s largest solar power project
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced a €25.1 million loan to Elektroprivreda Bosne i Hercegovine (EPBiH), the leading public electricity utility in Bosnia and Herzegovina, to finance the development of a 50 MWp solar power plant on a former coal ash landfill in Gračanica.
UniCredit Bank d.d. is contributing an additional €15 million in parallel, mobilized through the EBRD’s efforts. The combined funding will support the development, construction, and operation of two adjacent solar power plants, marking the largest solar project for EPBiH and a major investment in renewable energy.
This project is a significant step in EPBiH’s transition to renewable energy, supported by a 2050 technical cooperation initiative from the EBRD to explore decarbonization scenarios. The initiative will assess impacts on EPBiH’s operations and facilitate collaboration with authorities to introduce new educational standards in renewable energy.
Technical and advisory support for the project is provided by Austria through the Austrian Municipal Infrastructure Fund and the Austrian High-Impact Partnership on Climate Action, along with the EBRD’s Shareholder Special Fund.
These efforts align with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s goal of achieving a 43.6% renewable energy share by 2030. The EBRD has been instrumental in promoting the country’s green economy, having invested over €3.2 billion in 233 projects, with a focus on fostering a green economy, supporting private sector development, and enhancing regional integration.
