CIP’s Buffalo Plains wind farm in Canada delivers first power to grid
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has announced that its Buffalo Plains onshore wind farm in Alberta, Canada, has delivered its first power to the grid. The wind farm is expected to be fully operational by the fourth quarter of 2024.
The installation of the first turbine took place in April 2024, and by the end of August, one-third of the planned 83 turbines had been erected. Once completed, Buffalo Plains will have a total capacity of 495MW, making it the largest onshore wind facility in Canada. The project will generate enough green electricity to power 240,000 households in Alberta.
Siemens Gamesa and Borea Construction are collaborating on the delivery of this significant renewable energy project. CIP’s portfolio in North America, which exceeds 29GW, includes a mix of renewable energy assets such as onshore and offshore wind farms, solar, battery storage, pumped storage hydro, and transmission projects.
In August 2024, Norges Bank Investment Management committed €900 million ($1 billion) to CI V, the renewable energy fund managed by CIP, targeting wind and solar power projects across various regions. This investment aligns with the Ministry of Finance’s 2019 mandate to support investments in unlisted renewable energy infrastructure.
