BlueFloat Energy has announced the location for its 180 MW Winds of September Phase 1 offshore wind project, which will participate in Taiwan’s floating Demonstration Program launching in 2024. Situated 23km off the coast of Hsinchu City, the project will feature 12 floating platforms and has been in development since 2021.
The site was selected based on an energy yield assessment, environmental and social impact assessments (ESIA), and geophysical surveys. These studies were informed by a floating lidar campaign initiated in March 2023.
BlueFloat Energy has also partnered with the Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC) to assess Taiwan’s local manufacturing capacity for floating offshore wind mooring and anchoring systems.
The Winds of September Phase 1 project is expected to influence Taiwan’s maritime engineering, port operations, and supply chain, laying the groundwork for Phase 2, which will aim for participation in the Zonal Development R3-3 bidding. BlueFloat’s goal is to drive the large-scale commercial development of floating wind technology in Taiwan, supporting the nation’s 2035 offshore wind installation targets.
