Adani Power to continue supplying power to Bangladesh despite new export guidelines
Adani Power has announced that it will continue supplying power to Bangladesh from its 1,600 MW Jharkhand plant, which was established to exclusively supply electricity to the neighbouring nation. This comes after a recent amendment by India’s power ministry to the power import/export guidelines, allowing export-oriented plants to sell power within India under certain conditions, such as non-scheduling or payment defaults.
Despite this amendment, Adani Power clarified that the change is a universal provision designed to streamline power export processes and does not alter its existing commitment to Bangladesh. The company affirmed its dedication to providing uninterrupted power supply to Bangladesh as per the demand schedule and provisions of its power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).
This amendment follows the recent political crisis in Bangladesh and aligns with India’s goal of ensuring zero deficit power supply amid rising domestic demand. India’s power demand reached an all-time high of nearly 250 GW in May this year, with projections suggesting it may hit 260 GW during the summer season.
