Delhi mandates replacement of CNG Gramin Sewa vehicles with electric models
Sewa vehicles, registered under the 2010-11 scheme, with electric vehicles (EVs). This move is part of the city’s efforts to promote cleaner and more sustainable transportation. Gramin Sewa, introduced in 2011, allows three-wheelers to carry up to six passengers and operate in rural areas and resettlement colonies.
The transport department’s order specifies that new electric Gramin Sewa vehicles must have a maximum seating capacity of six passengers plus a driver and be approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH).
Gramin Sewa vehicle owners must apply online to replace their vehicles and complete a scrapping process before purchasing certified EVs. Approximately 2,000 to 3,000 Gramin Sewa vehicles remain operational in rural Delhi, down from the original 6,000.
