MNRE releases guidelines to boost PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar scheme
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has introduced new guidelines to enhance the PM Surya Ghar scheme for rooftop solar installations. The updated measures aim to simplify the process by urging states to adopt online payment systems for fees such as application, load enhancement, meter testing, and commissioning, reducing the need for multiple visits to discom offices.
MNRE will also incentivize innovation in rooftop solar projects with annual prizes, including Rs 10 million for first place, Rs 5 million for second, Rs 3 million for third, and 10 consolation prizes of Rs 0.5 million each. The guidelines include provisions for deemed load enhancement up to 10 kW, ensuring automatic approval and adjustment of consumers’ sanctioned load.
Discoms are required to display all fees on their websites, prioritize smart meter installations under the revamped distribution sector scheme, and maintain sufficient net meter stocks to avoid delays. These efforts are part of MNRE’s broader push to promote residential solar adoption across India under the PM Surya Ghar scheme.
